Hormones Hormone Unit

This unit drives the diagnosis of infertility and provides support during ovulation induction as drugs are given in order to collect as many eggs as can be potentially fertilized.  This process requires the correlation of ultrasound scans with stradiol levels.

When follicular size and hormonal concentrations signal oocyte maturation, retrieval is performed under sedation and the oocytes are then taken to the IVF laboratory for fertilization with the partner’s sperm.  Luteal phase support begins immediately after oocyte retrieval with the application of intramuscular progesterone.  The embryos resulting from this procedure are transferred within the next 72 hours.  Hormone levels are checked on day 7 after embryo transfer in order to adjust medication dosages, and five days later blood samples are taken for pregnancy testing.

Oocyte vitrification is performed if oocytes are retrieved in sufficient numbers for a second embryo transfer in order to avoid repeating the induction procedure.

This section of the clinic is also in charge of planning treatment cycles on the basis of individual patient schedules that contain accurate information regarding the dates on which patients must attend the clinic or undergo drug applications, blood testing and ultrasound examinations.
